Denon presents an exclusive interview with Nick Vivid, lead vocalist of the band The Nuclears.

The Nuclears is a band that stands out in an industry dominated by, in their own words, “formulaic product mass marketed for disposable consumption and vaguely smug “indie” art”. The band’s humble origins of starting out partly to become slightly more appealing to girls, and partly to get into bars underage, and mostly doing what they love the most, became a serious effort when the responses to their live shows made them realize that there are many people out there that are on the same wavelength as the rest of the band.

The Nuclears

Today, the band is on a mission to make the most out of their time, setting themselves on creating something that kids 30 years from now, can look back at and say “I wish I was there.” And with their art, their determination, and their music, they’re well on their way to their goal.

1. Tell us about yourself: What’s your profession, where did you grow up, and where do you live?

Nick Vivid, rock and roller, grew up in Buffalo NY. For several years I’ve been basing my operation out of NYC. Currently I’m in Bushwick Brooklyn, fronting the band The Nuclears.

2. When did you first decide to become a musician, & what inspired you?

I got Kiss’ Love Gun album when I was five. That was it.

3. When did you first fall in love with music? What were you doing? Where were you? Who were you with?

See answer #2. It’s always been about reliving that experience over and over again for me.

4. Describe your perfect listening experience? What is your idea of SOUND Bliss?

In my room with some candles lit, a lava lamp or two raising my electric bill, coffee, a couple packs of smokes, and Black Sabbath Vol. 4 on vinyl.

5. What was your first connection to Denon? When did you first hear of DENON?

The DL-160. It’s probably the best rock turntable cartridge that’s ever existed. I put that thing on my Technics sl-1200 and it’s the combination you can’t beat with gear 20x the price. What a sound. I love that cartiridge. I tried a bunch, and when I put the Denon on, that was IT.

6. Do you now or have you ever owned a piece of DENON equipment? Which one(s)?

See answer #5.

7. Tell us about your most memorable DENON moment?

When the DL-160 cartridge “broke in”. I was spinning an original US Pressing of Rush’s Moving Pictures, and bam, it dropped right in. Wow moment. AC/DC’s “For Those About to Rock” was another. By the way, I’ve played a bunch of my records for other people, they all are jealous – my vinyl rig is well regarded worldwide with a lot of audiophiles into rock and roll. It’s all thanks to Denon.

8. Who are your favorite artists today?

Modern bands that I really dig (other than my own) would be The Sights, The Dead Exs, The Naked Heroes, Photon Dynamo and the Shiny Pieces.

9. Who is doing work today that really inspires you?

Seth Godin.

10. What are your favorite 5-10 songs that we would find on your music play list?

Kiss – Shock Me
Black Sabbath – Hole in the Sky
Blue Oyster Cult – Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll
AC/DC – Kicked in the Teeth
Judas Priest – Victim of Changes

11. What do you think the future of music holds in store for us? How will music be different in the future? (In 10 years? 50 years?)

The business will be the most interesting aspect. The dividing line between the haves and the have nots (much like in any facet of American culture) will need to dissolve a bit to see any progress at all. The internet will have it’s own natural critical mass moment, and something will happen to allow more doors for opportunity to open. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 10 years. Change is inevitable.

12. If you could own a piece of sound equipment that you currently don’t have, something
that would enhance your music or home theater experience –what would that be?

The band now proudly owns an analog recording studio, so maybe something for that. Maybe another microphone. An AKG 414 or something like that. Or a nice LA-2A compressor.

The Nuclears’ debut album just came out on vinyl stores last June, so be sure to check out your favorite vinyl stalls soon! They’re also set to tour sometime soon, so always be on the lookout! Daylight Savings May Have Ended, But the “Savings” Will Keep Going!

Daylight savings, a somewhat clever creation intended by our innovative forefathers to “extend daylight” in order to save up on candles, and pretty soon, electricity. It’s not observed or celebrated with hoopla or fanfare because that would just be counterproductive, wouldn’t it? Instead, it’s practiced with steely determination to acquire savings of some sort. Something that we are keen on now more than ever, given our current economy. It is also something that the Denon Online Store will be able to help you with. How so?

image from web

The Denon Online Store, as the name suggests, is the direct online store for all your Denon gear needs. Gone are the days when you’re itching to get a piece of Denon tech, and no matter how hard you try, some household errand or ill-timed stomach flu just keeps you from stepping out of the house. With the Denon Online Store, all of the Denon gear you need that’s currently available will be at your fingertips, and you can buy it without leaving the house.

You could be this guy. But cooler.

That is where the savings come in. Not leaving the house to buy your Denon gear means not spending gas, which means not adding to the pollution to the environment, which, in turn, means helping save the world (one mall trip at a time). Simply not driving your car and spending gas looking for a store that may or may not carry your Denon gear, is already money saved in your pocket. Money you can use for other things.

But the savings don’t end there. Some stores may vary their prices from the original MSRP of the Denon gear (after all, it is a business, and they need to make a profit.) Save money by getting your audio wants and needs straight from Denon. Shipping is free too!

Check it out yourself. Click over to the Denon Online Store and start saving with every purchase.

Denon presents an exclusive one-on-one interview with Niko Porlier, lead guitarist and vocalist of the band Edelweiss.

Edelweiss is a band born out of two brothers: Niko Porlier, and his brother Coby, formed the band in 2010, by simply collaborating on music at home together. Eventually, they got introduced to their other members, Tommy Vitale and Tony Young, and Edelweiss as the full band we know today was born. Quickly, the band saw itself rise, becoming a major draw at different club and theater venues, as well as large, 16k crowds at large-scale regional music events.

With influences that include Bloc Party, Editors, and Joy Division, Niko Porlier and the rest of Edelweiss developed their own unique style of indie pop music, which is surely going to get the music industry’s attention very soon.

1. Tell us about yourself: What’s your profession, where did you grow up, and where do
you live?

I was originally born in Buffalo, NY, and lived in Northern New Jersey until I moved to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania in the fourth grade. I’m entering the twelfth grade in high school and I play guitar and sing in Edelweiss. I still live here in Stroudsburg which is about 90 minutes away from New York City.

2. When did you first decide to become a musician, & what inspired you?

I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old. Bands like Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, and Bloc Party inspired me to become a musician.

3. When did you first fall in love with music? What were you doing? Where were you? Who were you with?

I quit playing soccer to pursue guitar. I started taking lessons and realized I wanted to join a band when I was 10 or eleven. I had listened to and loved many bands that were shown to me by my father. I didn’t have many friends who played instruments at the time, but after about a year of guitar lessons my brother Coby picked up some drum sticks and we started working together.

4. Who is doing work today that really inspires you?

Personally, I am inspired by people who do something new and original. I like Tyler the Creator because he’s different from a lot of his colleagues in that genre.

5. What are your favorite 5-10 songs that we would find on your music play list?

zZz/Yourself and The Air
Sick Sad Little World/Incubus
You Will Leave A Mark/A Silent Film
Wake Up/Arcade Fire
Regen aus Rosenquartz/Schwefelgelb
Astraeas Dream/The Sword
Skeleton/Bloc Party
Stilettos/Holy Fuck

6. What do you think the future of music holds in store for us? How will music be different in the future? (In 10 years? 50 years?)

Subtly, music is always changing. In 10 years I think that mainstream music won’t be far from what people consider “underground” music you hear today. I’ve asked myself many times what things will sound like in 50 or 100 years.

7. If you could own a piece of sound equipment that you currently don’t have, something that would enhance your music or home theater experience –what would that be?

A subwoofer!

Edelweiss’ debut EP, “Pre-Columbians”, will be available worldwide on iTunes on September 13th, so be sure to stay tuned! For more information about Niko Porlier and the rest of Edelweiss, visit their Facebook Fan Page at

Denon Remembers Those in Need This July 4th

On this day, we are all excited and looking forward to the festivities to celebrate our country’s most important holiday: the day of our independence. Being free is truly one of the greatest gifts anyone could ever have, and on this most important of dates, all of us here are going to be celebrating with the rest of you.

But while we celebrate, let us remember that there are many others around the world who are, at the moment, unable to fully experience the joy and the freedom all of us here have. These include the thousands of people in Japan who have been affected by the tragic and devastating earthquake that struck their nation last March 11th.

This dark day affected all facets of Japanese, and world life, damaging homes and businesses, disrupting communications and commerce, and destroying lives. And while the resilient Japanese people, all 120 million inhabitants, have contributed greatly to the rebuilding efforts of their country, they are still very much in need of assistance.

This is why, almost immediately, almost 500 of our employees, Bain Capital, and D&M Holdings Inc. pooled efforts to assist many of the Japanese people who were affected, as well as employees whose homes and personal property were either damaged or lost. This spontaneous outpouring of support is one that we will always cherish. The great desire to help, shown by our colleagues and partners, reminds us of the kind of community spirit that our predecessors had that led to many great things, including our country’s independence.

And so, as we watch the fireworks going off in the night sky, sing along to the music, and celebrate with our loved ones, we commemorate the American spirit of brotherhood and unity that empowered our personnel, our company, and our partners, to assist those in need.

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

Congratulations to Our Lucky N7 Winner!

Honor The Lives of Our Heroes With These Memorial Day Songs and Denon

Memorial day is one of, if not the most sentimental of holidays, especially for people with loved ones, family members, and friends who have served in the military and gave up their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. This day can be commemorated a number of ways, whether it be enjoying a barbecue outdoors with family and friends, visiting important Armed Forces memorials and monuments, attending a Memorial Day parade or simply taking a moment to remember and honor the fallen heroes of our time.

But however Memorial Day is celebrated, one thing that can make the experience much more special is music. The right Memorial Day music can set the mood to be able to remember and honor our fallen loved ones and friends, wherever we are. Whether we’re celebrating with a lot of people and using a large scale audio system, like the Denon RCD-N7, or contemplating on memories past individually using headphones like the Denon AH-NC800, music is an integral part of celebrating this significant holiday.

And to help you think of the right music to enjoy during this significant holiday, we’ve made a quick shortlist of songs suited to commemorate our beloved fallen brethren in the Armed Forces. In no particular order…

  • The Star-Spangled Banner – There is no song more suited for Memorial Day than the national anthem. A bit of trivia: the song was tuned to a popular British drinking song, and has since become the most important song for the country. It is the song that commemorates what the soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice for.
  • America the Beautiful – This song is a combination of words written for a poem Pikes Peak, and music for a 19th century hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem. The song then grew to become one of the most beloved and most popular of the American patriotic songs. It has even been recommended as a replacement for the National Anthem!
  • Born in the USA (Bruce Springsteen) – If there is one song that truly sings about all the best things about the country our fallen soldiers have fought to preserve, this would be it. You can literally feel the pride emanating from legendary Bruce Springsteen in this amazing song.
  • Off We Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder – This song is the official U.S. Air Force song, but its lyrics evoke feelings of freedom and skyrocketing to victory and success, which can make anyone’s pride soar especially knowing what the fallen soldiers have done for us.
  • Something to Believe In (Poison) – This song was dedicated to the bodyguard and best friend of Brett Michaels, the band’s lead singer, who passed away some time before the song’s writing. However, the powerful message of the song can be applied to losses of all kinds, and in fact in one line he sings about a Vietnam veteran and the effects of the war on his life after the conflict.
  • Travelin’ Soldier (Bruce Robinson: 1996, Dixie Chicks: 2002) – A song that sings of a tale of love, and eventual loss, is a true tearjerker. It shows just one of the things our soldiers risk losing fulfilling their duty for the country, but it is perhaps the most important: the love of another.
  • Some Gave All (Billy Ray Cyrus) – The title says it all. This emotionally charged song is all about those who have, literally, given their all, to protect the freedoms we enjoy. “Love your country, and live with pride, and don’t forget those who died…” That line, right there, is exactly what Memorial Day should be about.

These songs are just a few you can add to your Memorial Day playlist. There are many more out there, like these ones, that can truly pay homage and tribute to our fallen sons and daughters, so be sure to prepare them all for Memorial Day!

Thank You And Good Luck!

Top 5 Things To Look Forward To With Your AVR-5308CI and AVP-A1HDCI

If you’re an owner of Denon’s flagship A/V components, the AVR-5308CI, or the AVP-A1HDCI, you’ve probably had them for a while now, and already know that these are amazing machines that can definitely enhance anyone’s viewing and listening experience. You’ve probably made the most out of their features over the years, like the AVR-5308CI‘s HQV Realta processor, HDMI to HDMI scaling, 6 HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs, among other things like the standard Denon cutting-edge technology installed during the AVR-5308CI‘s first release, and the AVP-A1HDCI‘s numerous audio decoders, three 32-bit floating-point surround processors, 48 24-bit/192kHz Burr-Brown DACs, 6 HDMI 1.3 inputs, 2 HMDI 1.3 outputs, Deep Color support, and much, much more.

All of these technologies made these two products the very best in their fields when they were released, and they continue today to still be among the very best machines in the A/V components market. But let’s face it, there’s not much else to look forward to with these machines, right? They can’t possibly get any better, correct?

Well, WRONG!

Denon has recently announced an upgrade program for these exact two products this year, which will keep both the AVR-5308CI and the AVP-A1HDCI up-to-speed with the industry’s latest technologies, boosting both machines, once again, to the top spots of their fields! So if you’re thinking about possibly replacing your AVR-5308CI or your AVP-A1HDCI, then you’d better check out these 5 things that the upgrade will soon be giving you! In no particular order, they are…

  • Audyssey MultEQ XT32 (including Audyssey Pro) – It is the newest, most accurate, and most cutting-edge room correction solution from Audyssey. The MultEQ XT is already in place in some of Denon’s other top-of-the-line machines, but the MultEQ XT32 will definitely make your AVR-5308CI and AVP-A1HDCI truly ready for the future! The XT32 room correction solution has ten thousand (yes, that’s 10,000) individual control points that allow the machine to correct the most detailed problems of a room. Its ultra high resolution filters are applied to all the channels, including the subwoofers, in order to truly enhance the audio that is produced.
  • Audyssey DSX Surround Processing – Say hello to a truly immersive and realistic home theater experience! Audyssey’s research led to the discovery that adding more channels in the correct places will make the surround sound experience much better. So they developed the DSX, which creates new wide and height channels and provides Surround Envelopment Processing to enhance the Front and Back channels, expanding beyond the 5.1 sound to deliver a truly awesome surround sound experience! It is an upgrade that will make your AVR-5308CI and AVP-A1HDCI much more amazing!
  • Dolby Pro Logic IIz – Normally, 5.1 and 7.1 channel surround systems provide a horizontal soundfield, meaning it is directed to the listener from only one vertical plane. However, what would happen if front height channels are added? Well, the result is surround sound that has incredible depth and dimension, something that the Dolby Pro Logic IIz is slated to provide! What the Pro Logic IIz does is identify, and then decode, spatial cues that come naturally in all content. It then processes any ambient sound, like rain, or wind, and directs them to the two front height speakers above the original front left and right speaker. What this means in layman’s terms, is you’ll hear lifelike sound from varying heights, providing an even more detailed listening experience!
  • 3D Video Pass-through via HDMI – 3D is fast becoming the current benchmark in home-entertainment. What was first thought to be only possible in large theaters, is now becoming a technology that more and more A/V systems are including! In fact, Denon already has a number of 3D capable machines and by getting this upgrade for your AVR-5308CI and AVP-A1HDCI, you too will be able to experience 3D entertainment without the need to buy totally new equipment!
  • A totally brand new home theater – This may not be a literal thing to receive, but rest assured, with all the upgrades your AVR-5308CI and AVP-A1HDCI will get, your home theater will transform into a brand new one, short of having new upholstered couches, a new bowl for popcorn, and new rugs and pillows!

Come October, these upgrades will all be up for grabs, so you don’t have to wait for much longer! Be ready to transform your home theater systems!
