The story starts out normal, and as they venture deep into the woods, they slowly begin encountering numerous paranormal events, building up to a climactic scene that will surely horrify, and entertain, any movie goer.
- The Sixth Sense (1999) – Yet another 1999 hit, The Sixth Sense is the movie that propelled director M. Night Shyamalan’s career to new heights. It tells the story of a boy who, as the dialogue says “I see dead people”, and his struggle to get to grips with the spirits around him. As far as ghosts go, this movie has plenty, from seeing a hanged family in the corridor of a school, to a boy who has his brains blown out, to a little girl in a tent who vomits, the movie is filled with many horrifying scenes, as well as a nicely executed twist at the end. - Session 9 (2001) – Session 9 is a dark, twisted, psychological ghost movie that features a paranormal entity that was never truly explained in the film, which makes it even more scary come to think of it. It is the very definition of creepy, featuring dark cinematography, scary ambient sounds, and a setting that is, even without special effects or story, is already scary in itself: an abandoned mental hospital. It follows the story of a group of hazmat workers cleaning up asbestos in the hospital, who then encounter a series of audio tapes of psychiatric “sessions” of a former patient. Session 9 refers to the 9th session in the tape, which will result in an absolute and total scare!
- The Ring (Japanese, 1998) – The Ring is a movie so scary that it is considered to be the most frightening horror film in Japan, and one of the scariest in the world, causing people to be horrified every time their cell phone or home phone rings, and have caused many people to truly be frightened of the paranormal for many weeks. It tells the story of a cursed video tape that, when watched, causes the viewer to receive a spooky phone call, and die within a week. Cursed people appear distorted in videos and photos, and subsequently die with the same frightened expression on their faces. A reporter who investigated the video curse, receives a copy of the tape, only to be cursed herself, along with her son who watched it accidentally. The story continues as she struggles to save her son, and hopefully, end the curse. The movie sparked the revival of Japanese, and Asian horror films in general, and put the spotlight of the world on the Asian horror movie genre. It produced a number of sequels, two Hollywood remakes, with a third remake on the horizon, which could very well be the first horror movie to be filmed in modern 3D.
- Paranormal Activity (2009) – One of the most profitable movies ever made, Paranormal Activity set a new benchmark in the horror film genre in the U.S., becoming arguably the most frightening modern horror movie to date.
